Hermann

I met Hermann 2022 in Kaufbeuren. Nine years ago he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s disease is classified as the second most common neurodegenerative disease in the world, after Alzheimer’s. The death of primarily dopamine-producing nerve cells ultimately leads to a lack of movement, muscle stiffness and instability.

While I was able to experience the complications that this disease causes in everyday life very closely during our time together, I was blessed to learn a lot from Hermann’s consistently positive and life-affirming attitude – day in and day out. Hermann was a musician all his life and used to play eleven instruments back then. Despite his situation, Hermann seemed very content and always remained confident. He visibly enjoyed every day and was happy with what he had – and didn’t have. Hermann’s humble attitude towards the incurable disease touched me deeply.

The photographs were taken over a period of four years. I consider myself grateful for the time I was allowed to spend with Hermann. Hermann already passed away.
